Do you have a best friend?
I have a best friend too.
He’s Sam (it’s short for Samuel);
his favorite color’s blue.
We often play together
where we met down at the park.
I always see him down there
even when it’s getting dark.
My mom says I’m not old enough
to stay out very late;
My dad doesn’t believe that I
even have a playmate.
My dad has never seen him
even though he’s always there.
Dad took a picture of us;
it gave him quite a scare.
The playground was on fire,
and Mom was on the swing;
But she didn’t come with us;
It was the strangest thing.
Mom said when we got home
that the camera must be bad,
and that Sam should come for dinner,
which really made me glad.
The next time that I saw him,
I told him to come by.
He said he would but if he did,
my family would die.
That night just before dinner
there was a knock at the door.
Dad opened it and saw no one
as Mom fell to the floor.
Her screams frightened the neighbors;
They could have woke the dead.
The only way to quiet her
was bash her in the head.
I ran out to the graveyard
where I could hide from Dad.
I hid behind Sam’s tombstone;
This made all of them mad.
They floated from the tombstones,
from the sky and from the ground.
They picked Dad up like a ragdoll
and threw him all around.
Once they were sure that dad was dead,
then they came after me.
I ran out to the playground
and hid up in a tree.
Mom was at the playground!
Sitting on a swing.
Samuel was there too,
and he was burning everything!
Mommy didn’t run;
she just looked at me and smiled.
Dying in a fire’s
pretty scary for a child.
But now everything’s better
and they rebuilt the park.
Now I just hang out here,
making friends until It’s dark…
