Today’s music rant- stupid lyrics. Mainly two songs I’ve heard recently- Harder Better Faster Stronger (the Kanye West rapes music version) and Lose Yourself by Eminem. I know they’re old songs, and I try to ignore them but they played at work and so here’s my take:
[NOTE: This rant was started Feb. 9th, 2013, I just never bothered to publish it; not sure why. I think it’s because I forgot what my original rant about Eminem was.]
First of all, Kanye’s lyrics in this stolen song- “do anybody make real shit anymore?” Kanye. First of all, you DON’T MAKE REAL MUSIC. So what the fuck are you talking about? You barely speak English and you make an ass of yourself every chance you get. Second of all, as the “voice of a generation” why this song? Seriously, no originality or talent? Why must you rape Daft Punk? I’m going to give them the benefit of the doubt and assume that they wouldn’t accept this song regardless of how much money was on the line, that you must have bought it from their record label. I heard a techno remix of it and thought “this song would be great if he’d just stfu.”
[NOTE: Daft Punk’s latest albums have changed my mind about Daft Punk. They USED to be good. Now they’re just pop music.]
Eminem… where to begin. On the one side, I liked his older stuff when it came out, because I was in Jr High and not allowed to listen to stuff like that. Everything was about drugs and swearing and violence; It seemed cool. Seems pretty stupid now. But he’s changed. As his albums come out, his style and content changes drastically, for the better (though I still maintain that at this point he’s just a pop artist). I’m not an Eminem fan, but a few of his songs are catchy to me. Mostly his collaborations, although I usually don’t like his guests either. I’m not a fan of pop and most rap, though on a song-to-song basis my opinion changes. Not that it matters. And this is where I give Kanye credit. He’s worked with (produced, I believe) The Game (Dreams was big when I lived in Poland and I still like it, don’t know why) and many others, and ghost-written for many artists, so I’m told. His stuff written for others is usually good, yet I can’t stand most of his own work. Oh well, maybe it’s just me.
This is where I have to mention the difference between quality music and what sells. I don’t know why pop sells- seriously, there is no musical content and the lyrics are meaningless, yet so many people buy into it. It’s like the story of the world’s greatest violin player playing in a subway just to see who notices. On that note, I’ll admit that most people don’t notice such things, but in their defense, he DID choose a transportation hub. People (maybe unnecessarily) are in a hurry to get to their destination and don’t come to the subway to listen to music. I’m not saying he’ll have better results on a large college campus or in Central Park, but the results must be different.
I think that’s all for now, I actually had forgotten what I originally thought to write about Eminem but I think what I wrote basically sums it up.
