In the near future I will write a little about myself, but for now I will just write a little about the kind of things I plan to write about, in between writing about music (which you can tell by the dates on the music posts are often months in between).
I’ve always been fascinated with scary, creepy, occult, twisted, etc. stuff; Halloween is my favorite holiday to decorate for, and I’m into Dia De Los Muertos (Day Of The Dead) (even though I have no family or other connection with it as a Mexican holiday).
Lately I’ve been thinking about trying my hand at writing horror, though I haven’t actually started. I like good horror movies, but sooo many of them just suck. Too predictable, too cliche, etc. My intent would be to make a horror film that feels more engaging to the audience than just watching a movie. Horror never scares me because I always know it’s not real. While mine also would be not real, I hope to give a feeling of dread at things that are real. The kind of things I imagine are the kind of things that could scare anyone; normal people, places, and objects that do absolutely unpredictable and horrible things. Obviously I’d have to come up with an explanation that ties everything together, but the idea is to put a fear of anything and everything into people, particularly when they’re alone. I hate when movies try to sell “based on a true story” to scare people, and I really hate when they film in first person to try to convince you it’s actually them with a camera and therefore real. Usually it just means you’re watching a really low-budget movie and it’s just too hard to take it seriously.
Another idea I think I’m likely to start writing before this book/movie idea is “children’s” stories like Mr. Babadook. I watched that movie last night and I think it’s a great idea, even if it wouldn’t sell well just because it’s not really for it’s intended audience…
To get a feel of where I’m coming from as far as horror movies go, my favorite horror movie is probably Silent Hill. Everything just changes, and if you’ve never seen it before or played the game, you have no idea what will happen next, what kind of horror awaits, etc. There are of course “better” movies out there, but nothing really scary in my opinion. And most “horror” films are either super-predictable slashers (not scary), or are only full of jump-scares, which also get quite predictable quite quickly. I also love horror video games; Slenderman is always a good one but my favorite has to be SCP: Contaimnent Breach. The paths change every time you play, monsters are in different places, etc. SCP is free, and these guys really did a good job of getting you quickly into the game and then filling you with dread every time a door opens, or worse, if you enter a room and another door is already open. As far as the main monster goes, here’s a quick game hint: think Weeping Angels from Dr. Who.
Anyway, I’m thinking I’ll start writing some CreepyPasta-style short stories/poems, and go from there. Enjoy. 🙂
